Both skippers had their eyes up at the sky when they walked out for the toss. The news is that bright sunshine has greeted them and spectators here. While Bravo confirmed that Chris Gayle will not play this match due to thigh strain, Dhoni says India would have chosen to field first too due to possible dew later in the day.

PREVIEW

A dominant India would look to seal the one-day series by taking an unassailable 2-0 lead against a struggling West Indies, who are proving to be a complete mismatch to the world champions, as the two teams square off in the second match in Visakhapatnam. (Rain threatens second ODI)

After a listless performance in the Test series, losing explosive opener Chris Gayle to an injury has added to the woes and worries of the Caribbean side, who now face a do-or-die situation to save the series.

The West Indies were expected to do better in the shorter format but the continuous failure of their batsmen have made sure that the Windies have been unable to put up a fight so far.

The reversal of fortunes has eluded the visitors as India cantered to a six-wicket victory with 88 deliveries to spare to take a 1-0 lead in Kochi.

STAT

The ACA-VDCA Stadium has always been lucky for India who have won all the four matches here right from the very first one on April 5, 2005 when a long-haired Dhoni came into prominence with his 123-ball 148 to devastate Pakistan.

Kohli equalled Viv Richards' record

Virat Kohli slammed 86 in the first ODI against West Indies on Thursday to become the joint-fastest batsmen, with Vivian Richards, to reach the 5000-run mark. Both Kohli and Richards played 114 innings although the West Indies' legend featured in 126 matches, six more than Kohli.

Kohli - currently ranked the best ODI batsman, needed to score 81 runs in the match to match Richards' feat. A fluent shot over deep mid-wicket boundary helped the Delhi batsman complete the milestone - one appreciated by spectators at Kochi's Nehru Stadium. The Indian vice-captain - adjudged man-of-the-match - scored 86 runs with nine fours and two sixes before being dismissed by Jason Holder. (Read more)

India’s Latest Cricket Hero

Rohit Sharma is having a dream run. After his magnificent double-hundred against Australia in a One-Day International in Bangalore, he scored a century on his Test debut at Eden Gardens in Kolkata this week.

The 26-year-old is in the form of his life. The double-hundred last week was only the third by a batsman in the history of ODI cricket, a format in which Sharma made his debut in 2007. He has played 108 ODIs for India.

The wait for Test cricket was much longer, but he has made the most of his opportunity in the ongoing match against the West Indies, with an innings of 177 that put India in control of the match Thursday.

He spoke with The Wall Street Journal ahead of this series about his form, captaining the Mumbai Indians, opening in ODIs, playing for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and more. Edited excerpts:

The Wall Street Journal: 2013 has been a good year for you. Are you feeling happy with the way things have progressed?

Rohit Sharma: Yes I am very happy with where I am. This year has been fantastic and a lot has been happening for me. I am not thinking about what happened in the past, because there is no point looking back. I am just raring to go again and continuing in the same vein. Consistency is the key for me.

WSJ: Talking about consistency, opening the innings in ODIs has really helped you. Is it because you have more overs to play now?

R. Sharma: Time is one thing, yes, and it allows building an innings properly. I haven’t really changed the way I bat just because I am opening in ODIs. Even my preparation is the same. A lot of times when I got an opportunity to play in the middle order, things just didn’t work out for some reason. But that is how life works sometimes. Personally I don’t feel I did badly in the middle order, but statistics will show you a different picture.

WSJ: Did it come as a surprise when you were moved up the order?

R. Sharma: It wasn’t a surprise in January when I opened against England. I had opened the innings before and I was ready to do it again. Cricket has changed. Batsmen should be ready to bat anywhere in the order as needed. But yes, in the Champions Trophy in England later in the summer, I was a bit surprised. There were two fulltime openers in the squad, Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay. I wasn’t aware till the morning of the first match that I was opening.

WSJ: Nobody expected a win at the Champions Trophy. How important were the roles M.S. Dhoni [captain] and Duncan Fletcher [coach] played with this young team?

R. Sharma: M.S. Dhoni is an incredible captain. He knows how to get the best out of his players and makes it fun for us at the same time. We challenged ourselves, and we came out victorious in England. He has a great track record, has won everything, across all formats, in all conditions. He is a great leader.

To those on the outside, Duncan Fletcher seems to have a silent role in the team. He doesn’t even talk much to the media. But he knows what he is doing. He knows what it takes to be at the top and he tells us how to raise the bar of performance. He has set very high standards for us and he inspires us at all times to achieve them. He lends great weight to the fitness aspect. The support staff is also great. We have Trevor Penney and Joe Dawes who have given us an energetic feel in the dressing room.

WSJ: You have had a taste of leadership yourself, leading Mumbai Indians successfully in the Indian Premier League and then in the Champions League Twenty20. How has that impacted you as a player?

R. Sharma: It was a great moment for me, when Mumbai Indians chose me as their captain. I haven’t had many captaincy stints in my career. Yes, I have led Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, but this atmosphere is totally different. It helped me gain confidence in my instincts. I tried to be hands-on and motivated. A captain must stay positive at all times and keep his chin up. I took joy in this leadership responsibility and it was a turning point for me personally.

WSJ: More than 100 ODIs and countless T20s, you missed out on Test cricket for long. Does that hurt?

R. Sharma: Oh absolutely. It was very disappointing. I did come close a couple of times in the past. But then I cannot do much about those circumstances. It is not in my hands and in a way it is alright, for there is no shortage of time. I believe good things are in store for me.

WSJ: Talking of Tests, India has a lot of Test cricket in 2013-14, starting with West Indies and then South Africa, onto New Zealand. Are you looking forward to it?

R. Sharma: South Africa are very strong opponents and we need to play them and assess ourselves. After that we have New Zealand and then England next summer, Australia and then finally the 2015 World Cup. It is a critical season of cricket for us. There are a lot of expectations with the Indian team and we can only fulfil them if we are able to compete against the best. We want to maintain our ODI no.1 ranking and regain the no.1 ranking in Tests as well. By winning the Champions Trophy in England, we have set the bar high and we want to maintain that standard of performance.

* With two matches washed out, two won by India and two by Australia, the seven-match ODI series between the two teams has been absolutely fascinating. (Recap: Results | Stats) Fans have been treated to unbelievable cricket as twice in the series, scores in excess of 700 were posted. Yet, no one team has managed to gain bragging rights and the see-saw battle between the two boils down to the final ODI at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here.

* Chinnaswamy Stadium has been a happy hunting ground for Team India. The hosts have played Australia here in five ODIs and have won three and lost just one. In fact, the Indian team registered three consecutive wins against the Aussies here between 1989 and 2001 before losing a 2003 ODI. (More about the venue here)

* While both teams have been equally matched so far, the visitors may rue sending Mitchell Johnson back. The pacer was the among fellow bowlers and with seven wickets and an economy of 5.68, ensured a tight grip on the Indian batsmen while most others were being pelted. Johnson though was earlier sent back home to gear up for the Ashes.

* Apart from Johnson, not many bowlers have had a comfortable series. Virat Kohli, for India, has ensured that runs flow like water but he agrees that new ODI rules have made life a whole lot easier for batsmen and a nightmare for the bowlers.

Record-breaking Chris Gayle leads RCB’s big win over Pune Warriors

Riding on Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 66-ball 175, Royal Challengers Bangalore registered a crushing 130-run win over Pune Warriors in their IPL match at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Chris Gayle rubbed more salt in Pune Warriors’ wounds when he picked up two wickets in the final over of the innings.

Chasing a record total of 263, Pune Warriors could only score 133 for the loss of nine wickets.

Pune Warriors India lost half of their side at the score of 100.

Pune team reached the 100-run mark in 78 balls. Seamer Ravi Rampaul picked up his second and Bangalore’s fifth when he dismissed Steven Smith, who scored a brisk 31-ball 41 with the help of six boundaries.

Murali Karthik gave Bangalore first breakthrough as he dismissed Pune’s Robin Uthappa in the very second ball of the first over.

Ravi Rampaul picked up the second wicket for Bangalore when he sent skipper Aaron Finch back in the dug out.

Seamer Jaydev Unadkat picked up two quick wickets as he scalped Luke Wright and Yuvraj Singh to dent Pune’s mammoth run chase

Earlier, Chris Gayle hit the fastest century in the history of professional cricket blasting an incredible 175 off 66 balls as Royal Challengers Bangalore posted a record 263 for five.

Gayle hit the fastest century, off just 30 balls, and the highest-ever individual score in a T20 game surpassing Kolkata Knight Riders‘ Brendon McCullum who hit 158 off 73 balls against RCB at this very Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Incidentally, RCB’s total was also the highest-ever total in any T20 game.

Put into bat, it was ‘Gayle Force’ that blew away the Pune Warriors as the big-bodied Jamaican showed his power-hitting ability as he struck 13 fours and 17 sixes en route the fastest ever T20 century off only 30 balls. 154 out of his 175 runs came in boundaries and off only 30 scoring strokes.

Typically, he brought up his century with a six off Ashoke Dinda that sailed over the stadium and in the process also damaged the roof.

The carnage started from the second over bowled by rookie paceman Ishwar Pandey. Playing his first IPL match, Pandey found out what top-level cricket was all about as Gayle hit him for five boundaries taking 21 runs of that over.

Mitchell Marsh and Aaron Finch got even worst treatments as they went for 28 and 29 runs in their respective overs as both were clobbered for four sixes each.

AB de Villiers also played his part to perfection with a cameo scoring 31 off eight balls (3×4, 3×6).

Earlier, Aaron Finch will continue as Pune captain he has won the toss and they will bowl first.

Royal Challengers are unchanged.

In Pune Mitchell Marsh is in for Ajantha Mendis and Ali Murtaza comes in for Rahul Sharma
